hello my old friend

insomnia, hello my old friend,
I wonder what's in store for me today,
will I lie awake, or simply go crazy

conundrum

I need to sleep
and yet my problem is
that I can't sleep
just staring at the abyss,
until my mind
can finally be silence,
by the darkness.

Some thoughts about Healthcare Issues

I just came back to from my podiatrist appointment and my podiatrist doctor was explaining to me the problems that healthcare (respectively medicine, hospitals, phamacies or big drug companies and government) policies that seem to not benefit the people. Of course, he did ask me to go consider the politicians that are currently running in the primaries and see the political issues that are big for everyone: healthcare.

The problems that seems to underlie in this is the issue of money. People who have medacaid cannot always get the best doctors because of how the insurance pays them. Example from my doctor: this one lady has a foot disease and the hospital didn't want the doctor to run a test to determine whether the lady has this foot disease or not. The doctor argued that if he didn't get to run this exam that the lady would die from the disease and the family could have had a $20 million dollar lawsuit. The hospital backed out and allowed the doctor to run the exam. He told me if this patient went to another doctor, she could have gotten her leg amputated. That's the last kind of thing anyone should do, but he explained that when it comes to foot diseases the patients end up paying the cost for the medication and for the care becuase most foot diseases are not life-threatening diseases. (And apprently infectious disease doctors tend to consult for diseases that are life-threatening). Another problem is of course, pharmaceuticals, like the case of Martin Shkreli, who raised the cost of AIDS medication by 5000%. He is currently arrested not for what he did in terms of raising the prices for medication but for other reasons.

All of these points drive to home what I learned in my current class, Introduction to Behavioral Economics. My professor was bringing to light that when it comes to policy making, that psychologists aren't even considered about what kind of policies that can benefit people.

I am not sure how to reform Medacaid or other issues that the medical field has, but I would love to think of ways that would be beneficial to people. This whole conversation left me pondering about what kind of policies that should be changed.

I was thinking about whether the US healthcare should be more like the Canadian healthcare model, however, the reality is that Canadian healthcare model is really expensive and would impose so many Americans to pay higher taxes just to cover this. (A great article that highlights this point is seen here: http://www.forbes.com/sites/theapothecary/2014/06/13/if-universal-health-care-is-the-goal-dont-copy-canada/#3fa9e190290d)

Looking at the Holocaust in a different way.

So yesterday, my college hold an event tha had Professor Timothy Snyder from Yale discuss his latest book: "Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning."

He had an interesting argument about how to look at the Holocaust in a different lense. He discussed how Hitler viewed the world in a rather ecological way, by stripping away the artificial ways (bioogical) and build the races though land and food.  And that the Nazi Reich main goal was gaining the land of milk and honey (aka Ukraine).

Hitler also stated in his Mein Kampf about how if anyone else argues otherwise about not spreading greed and envy and that science is a trap, and therefore, the woldd is fooled by the Jews.

The Holocaust happened because while the Nazis thought that they can win Russia in less than 9 weeks (which didn't happen) although, they were in Kiev, that Hitler had to blame someone (anyone) why the Nazis weren't winning. Hence, the final solution was thought up, in order to destroy the people who were helping the Germans "lose."

The only way the Holocaust happened is when Nazi Germany induced failed-states. When Germany took over Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, other countries during WWII, the political parties, estalished parties were forced out or induced into failure and thus left the citizens in those state to feel like nothing, i.e. no more country, no longer a citizen, you're now a refugee or second-class citizen in Nazi Reich. Hence, how the humilation and politics helped to create the Holocaust.

When March 11, 1938 happened in Austria, the Jews were surrounded by Austrian citizens and looked upon with shame and humiliation, as to remind the citizens of Austria the last political state in Austria that got stripped away and no longer exists.

I am not sure if I agree with all what Professor Snyder stated. But it was interesting to hear how when social scientists start to generalize something (about the world, human nature, etc.) that the historians come in to state, there's an exception to this generalization.

self doubt/poison

poison is when
your fellow classmates
call you ugly
and starting to believe them.
poison is self-doubt
that runs in the veins
it starts to
bleed you dry
until there's
nothing left
of you.
self-doubt is the cruelest
form of punishment
to give to yourself.
self-doubt is poison
in your mind.
And only goes away,
when you're finally
succumb to your own doubts.

Snow

I wanted to write a poem about the trope snow in love, and not use the word love in the poem. I think I am going to come back to this poem later or another time.

Snow

cold hands,

warm heart,

standing here on a cold day,

with so much warmth,

I stare,

and state,

"Yes, to the answer"

which leaves me breatheless

on a cold winter day.
